From Entrepôt harbour to urban harbour
The urban harbour provides a contemporary continuation of the old function of the Entrepôt harbour, but now in the form of an urban marina. The Entrepôt harbour forms the gateway to both the city centre, via the River IJ, and through the Oranjesluizen locks to the IJsselmeer lake.
The marina will be visible from Van Lohuizenlaan, thanks to the masts of the boats sticking up above the square. Access to the quay is between the two strips of the building. The café will be expanded by a floating deck, providing both a link to the marina and to the building. The marina facilities will be located on ground level, in the building section on the north-eastern side of the plan. The users of the moorings and passers-by can make use of these.
The marina will have an industrial look, without this affecting the pleasant atmosphere for people participating in water sports and people on the shore.
The location is typified by the waves caused by the vessels passing on the IJ. A floating steel jetty has been chosen owing to the depth of the harbour and the differences in water level. Floating jetties can be designed to be virtually as stable as fixed jetties, but with the considerable added benefit of flexibility. The size of the boxes and the layout of the marina can be adapted to changing circumstances. In addition, less pile-driving is required.
The jetties will be made using spherical steel floats, emphasising the industrial aspect and the robust, urban image. The jetties are constructed from sustainable materials, with a profiled deck of FSC-certified timber, sustainability class I. This type of jetty has a long useful life (approx. 50 years), is solid and maintenance-free, and can take heavy loads. The whole design also works as a breakwater. The use of floating jetties, in combination with finger jetties, gives each mooring its own space, thereby preventing “stacking”. This also provides better security.
A floating steel jetty provides peace of mind, both in terms of mooring and of the little maintenance that can be expected. The manager (harbour master) will therefore not have to spend much time on maintenance.
The marina will have between 200 and 220 moorings. A legal framework will be created for the marina in which the nature of the marina association will be laid down. At a later stage, the VOF Kopgebouw Entrepot partnership will compile extensive project documentation for the marina, to provide all the relevant information to interested parties.
